AROUND THE GREENS - SIMON EDWARDS was responsible for his nearest rival, Tim Maxwell's surge to a 245-point lead in the Mansell Finishes Winter Series Order of Merit
Maxwell, who has coached Sir Alex Ferguson and several United players, could not cure his own problems when his game went off the boil at the end of last season.

He sought advice from Clays Golf Centre professional Edwards, one of the most consistent players on the North Region circuit, who literally put him straight.

"I did not know where the ball was going, my driving was all over the place," said the Knutsford professional.

"We've had three sessions on the practice ground and I'd planned to see him again before the final Mansell event but Simon is the only player who can beat me in the merit so it's a bit cheeky!"

Maxwell has not been out of the top 10 in the five fixtures, and two second places and a share of first prize last week with Welshman Lee Rooke at Hillside distanced him from PGA Cup player Edwards.

Wrexham professional Tim Dykes pocketed 1,890 euros after finishing joint 60th at the Madeira Island Open.

He carded rounds of 72, 74, 74, 73 for a five-over par total of 293 on his first start this season.

Dykes is playing in his second season on the Challenge Tour which continues with three events in South America before returning to France for the Brittany Open, on April 23.

Irwin Elkin and Graham Stokes combined to win the CLAYS Seniors Yellow Ball Competition with a score of 147 points.

Mike Copperwheat, Jim Murphy, Peter Almond, and Andy Mitchell compiled 146 points to secure second place.

Clays Seniors drew their match 6-6 against Holywell, and drew 5-5 in their match at Mold.
